Minimum Requirements:
You must, unless otherwise indicated, meet the following requirements on the date you apply.
1. Age: You must be 18 years of age by the time of hire.
2. Education:
- Graduation from high school or equivalent. Ten (10) semester units, from an accredited college, in Fire Science, Fire Prevention, Fire Safety or firefighting methods and techniques is preferred.
- California State Certification, or equivalent, for Firefighter I or Firefighter I Academy Graduate certificate.
- Ability to obtain a valid California driver's license Class C with Firefighter Endorsement within one year of employment.
3. Certificates at time of Application: Please submit with your application one (1) copy of the front and back of the following, which must be current and valid at the time of application and at time of hire:
- California State Certification, or equivalent, for Firefighter I or Firefighter I Academy Graduate certificate.
- Current Emergency Medical Technician certification issued by the State of California or National Registry. Current and valid Paramedic certificate issued by the State of California or the National Registry preferred.
4. Certificates/Licenses at Time of Hire Only: At the time of hire, you must have the following current and valid certificates/licenses:
- California Class C Driver's License which permits you to drive an automobile.

Application:
Employment applications must be submitted to the Human Resources Department along with copies of all relevant documents, certificates, licenses, and applicable cards. Candidates are required to ATTACH ALL REQUIRED CERTIFICATES to the application, or the application will not be considered, and the applicant will be disqualified.
Written Test:
Written examinations will be scheduled periodically, and candidates will be notified of their exam date. The written exam will be waived if:
- The applicant provides a copy of their passing score on the FCTC written test indicating all qualifications have been met and is dated within one year of the application submission date: and
- The applicant is a Fire Academy Graduate; and
- The applicant possesses a valid Paramedic License.

Oral Interview:
Applicants will be evaluated based on relevant training and experience. Qualified candidates will be invited to participate in an examination process consisting of an oral board interview and emergency medical skills testing. Successful candidates will be placed on an eligibility list.
Physical Ability Test:
1. The Calexico Fire Department Physical Ability Test (PAT) will be administered ONLY to those candidates who pass the written test and have been scheduled for the oral board interviews; or
* The City of Calexico will accept a valid CPAT card from the California Firefighter Joint Apprentice Committee in lieu of taking the Physical Ability Test. A copy of the CPAT card must be included in your application and must stay current during the recruitment process. If placed on an eligibility list, the CPAT card must be valid at the time of hire.
Eligibility List:
The eligibility list established will be in effect for a period of one year. Applicants will be notified of their eligibility status as positions become available. Applicants must update their contact information and relevant documentation periodically throughout the year.
All appointments are subject to the successful completion of a pre-employment physical that includes a drug screening, a background investigation including LIVESCAN fingerprinting and driver's license verification from the Department of Motor Vehicles. Qualified candidates will also be required to submit verification of the legal right to work in the United States. All employees are required by law to sign a loyalty oath to the United States and the State of California constitution at time of hire.
